ASTHMA & COPD PREVENTION

Respiratory Portal

Our Practice's Role

Preventing asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) focuses on reducing the risk of developing these conditions and minimising factors that can trigger or worsen symptoms. While asthma often has a genetic component, and COPD is commonly linked to long-term exposure to harmful substances, proactive steps can make a significant difference.

  • Advice on smoking cessation programs
  • Guidance on improving air quality at home and work
  • Vaccination services to protect against respiratory infections
  • Educational resources on reducing exposure to common triggers
  • GP & Practice Clinic Support on prevention, diagnosis. treatment, monitoring, referrals when appropriate and follow-up.

Our practice is here to help you reduce your risk of asthma and COPD through:

Early Detection & intervention

For both asthma and COPD, early detection and prompt management are key to preventing severe symptoms and complications:

  • Regular Check-Ups:
If you are at risk or have mild symptoms, regular health check-ups can help detect early signs and enable timely intervention.
  • Awareness of Symptoms:
Be alert to persistent coughs, breathlessness, or wheezing and consult your doctor if these occur.

Prevention - Asthma

Although asthma cannot always be prevented, you can take steps to reduce the risk of developing symptoms or worsening the condition:

  • Avoid Allergens and Triggers:
Identify and minimise exposure to allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mould.
  • Quit Smoking:
Avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, as this can irritate the airways and increase the likelihood of asthma symptoms.
  • Manage Respiratory Infections:
Prevent colds and flu by washing your hands regularly, getting vaccinated, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
  • Improve Indoor Air Quality:
Use air purifiers, ensure proper ventilation, and avoid using strong cleaning chemicals or fragrances in your home.
  • Monitor Physical Activity:
Exercise is important, but be aware of exercise-induced asthma and discuss safe options with your healthcare provider.

Prevention: COPD

COPD is largely a preventable condition. You can significantly reduce your chances of developing it if you avoid smoking.
If you already smoke, stopping can help prevent further damage to your lungs before it starts to cause troublesome symptoms. COPD prevention largely revolves around reducing exposure to risk factors, particularly smoking and environmental pollutants:

  • Quit Smoking:
Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Quitting smoking is the most effective way to reduce your risk and slow disease progression.
  • Vaccinations:
Get vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcal infections to prevent respiratory infections that can lead to COPD exacerbations.
  • Avoid Secondhand Smoke and Pollutants:
Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, and harmful chemicals in the workplace or home.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices:
Maintain a healthy diet, stay active, and manage stress to keep your immune system strong and reduce the risk of infections.
  • Wear Protective Equipment:
If you work in an environment with dust, fumes, or other lung irritants, use recommended protective equipment such as masks or respirators.
