Bereavement
As of September 2024, a new system is in place for registering a death. If the patient dies at home, our GPs will, in most cases, be able to issue a death certificate.
This will then get emailed to a Medical Examiner who will review the cause of death and they will speak to families regarding their thoughts about why their loved one died. This is the new step and it is thought it will take around 2 days in straight forward cases but may be longer depending on circumstances.
The Medical Examiners will inform the family when this is done. Following this, the death certificate will be forwarded directly by the Medical Examiners to the Registrars Office and an appointment made for families to register the death of their loved one.
This would usually be within 5 working days depending on available appointments. There will be no need to collect a death certificate from the surgery as this will be sent directly to the Registrar’s office.
